My Garden

Our small yard sadly isn't much conducive to vegetable gardening. Since we're renting and hoping to move soon, there's no point in digging up the the owners' nicely "landscaped" yard. The yard is only about the size of a small bedroom, so I don't know that "landscaped" is the right word. Plus we don't cut the grass much, and it looks pretty unkempt most of the time. And a good portion of the yard is a pile of dressed up rocks meant to cover up a drain or hatch or something possibly mysterious. Regardless, it looks nice, but it's not a great space to plant food.

But...we do have a west facing balcony with lots of sun. My plants seem to be doing well in the sun. I always plant basil and tomatoes, but this year I'm also growing mint and strawberries! I got a bunch of fresh mint for a dollar at the farmers market, stuck them in some water, and waited for them to root. I just planted them, so we'll see how they grow. I should have a mess of mint in no time since mint is pretty much like a weed.

Basil! Organic sweet basil and lots of thai basil. I tried to grow thai basil last year but they all started rotting even though my pots had drainage holes on the bottom. Here's a tip that's helped me; put some rocks in the bottom of the pot before you put the soil in. It helps with the drainage so that the soil doesn't turn into a swampy sludge at the bottom of the pot. I harvested some rocks from the pile in our yard, how convenient.

Once again, the thai basil were all rooted from pieces I brought back from a phở restaurant or from cuttings from the asian supermarket. Easy peasy, stick 'em in water and watch them root!

I have two kinds of strawberries, one seems to be producing better berries than the other. The other berries look like they didn't get pollinated, since all they produced were tiny red fruits that are smaller than a pencil eraser. I wish I could plant these in the ground so they could spread... I recommend trying a fresh-picked strawberry straight from the plant while it's still warm from the sun. Yummy! One day I'd love to start planting lettuce and potatoes, too...and also some Chinese vegetables. When I was little, my mom used to plant all sorts of vegetables; I remember snow peas, tomatoes, chinese greens and corn! The corn was small, but it was so fresh! but there was a problem with deer coming in the night to eat our corn right off the stalks. ah, memories.

Lastly, this is how long the grass was before I cut it. It's hard to tell, but it went up to my knees. Oh, and did I mention that I cut by hand? I mean to say, I cut the lawn with a pair of scissors. We don't own any grass trimmers or yard clippers or anything, and I wasn't about to use my dwindling savings on yard tools. So one day, I spent a pleasant afternoon outside with the compost bin and a pair of scissors trimming the grass. Our yard is so small, it actually didn't take long at all, maybe an hour. I enjoyed it. I'd do it again.

Free Stuff for the New Year

I was out on my weekly short drive yesterday to fill up my gas tank and go to the craft store. Since I started driving my car only once a week, I haven't had to put gas in my car since the beginning of October. And I still had half a tank left! No secret to it: plan ahead and combine your car trips, walk or bike when possible (for me, if it's less than 1.5 miles I grab my ipod and walk), and ride the bus. Of course, it helps if you live in the city where things are close by.

The reason I was filling up was because my supermarket gas discounts were expiring. I was driving around looking for parking when I came across some free furniture. Obviously I couldn't fit all of it in my prizm, so I snatched up a chair, a green vase, and a side table. I should have tried to fit in another chair. Greedy.

Just the day before, I was thinking how I'd love to work in our loft, but I needed a small table. The ceiling is low and it's accessed by a ladder, so I found myself wishing we had an extra IKEA LACK table sitting around. And then I found this on the street. Tadaa, the tomato loft office.

Our Seafood Dinner at Home

Friday was a shopping day. We went to whole foods, costco, and the chinese supermarket to stock up my food supply and my brother's coffee supply. we couldn't decide where to eat for dinner, so while at the chinese market we decided on dinner at home. We got a pack of mussels, two dungeness crabs, and an assortment of chinese dumplings. The crabs ended up being about $15 for the two of them, and they have a lot of meat! It was goooood.

The Craft Cave

I spent a good deal of time today conducting research for my shop. It's a beautiful day today, I really should be outside. But I want to get my christmas cards printed. I've been looking up printshops and checking pricing and all that really fun business.

i just took a few pics as I was sitting at my desk. [sorry for boring post] Last night I dubbed this room The Craft Cave. There was a rather large spider in the Cave last night, about the size of a quarter. I'll have to lure the cats down there more often to take care of the spiders.

anyway...Joanna bought a desk, too, the other day. Her desk came packed with some big styrofoam pieces. I wrapped one in an old bed sheet with some spray mount and tape, nailed it to the wall...and shazam! I have a bulletin board. That's what the light blue thing is to the left. The blue animal is something I made a few years ago from an online tutorial. The football shape is my leaf pattern for my tomato ottoman, cut from a pottery barn catalog.

I found this Ritzenhoff beer glass at goodwill for a dollar. I thought it would be perfect for my bamboo. I won the trophy in third grade on field day in scooter board racing. It's the only trophy I've ever won. I'm very proud.

my computer....i was trying to create a logo, but i ended up creating a character. The arms are still in development

Enjoyment is to have a sweet such as eating clouds in the sky.

My Mini-Studio

I arrived in Seattle almost four weeks ago with only what I could fit in my car. The only piece of furniture I own (if it can be called furniture) is my air mattress. And some large ottoman pillows I made. I've been in desperate need of a desk lately. The kitchen table is fine, but it gets wonky when I use the sewing machine. And I needed more table space to work on. I've been checking goodwill, but haven't found anything close to what I wanted. Plus, it had to be able to fit in my prizm. IKEA is about a half hour from where we are, which is why I hadn't gone there yet. But I knew I could get a desk there for relatively cheap, and there were a few additional household items I needed, too.

So, yesterday Joanna and I made a trip to IKEAland! I say IKEAland because the place is enormous. I believe we were there for at least two hours. But I got my desk! My mouse doesn't work on the red table though, so I'll have to start using a mousepad again, but that's fine. Maybe I'll make one. i'll post more pics as I get my little studio set up.

Starbucks central...on the way back from IKEA.

Second tomato ottoman is nearly finished. I just need to put a logo or label on it before I stuff it up.

Taking a break from not working...

I may not be employed at the moment, but I am working. I'm trying to build up my portfolio, learn some flash, and practice designing logos. And now i'm taking a break.
Ava and my tomato...how cute. She's been sleeping there for a few hours.

my office/kitchen table/sewing table. it's much messier now.

something i'm working on...

A Place I Call Home

My new home, the one with the red door. And a view of the street from the balcony. I'm in the middle of a job search, so just a short quick post for now.

And this is one of my new roommates.
